Aipan Art

Aipan has a prominent place in the Uttarakhand folk painting style. This art is mainly used in religious rituals and auspicious works. Aipan is mainly written with three fingers, without it religious rituals, festivals, and worship are considered incomplete. This art is used for making posts in religious rituals and decorating thresholds and courtyards. Under this, shapes like sun, moon, swastika, conch shell, flowers, etc. are made from ocher (red clay) and rice solution (viswar).

Apart from Uttarakhand, this art is also used in other states and is called by other names in every state like Epona in Assam and Bihar, Ariyana in Uttar Pradesh, Mandana in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Rangoli in Gujarat and Maharashtra, Kollam in South India, Muggu in Andhra Pradesh and Alpana in Orissa. This art was established in Uttarakhand during the Chand dynasty.

This art is based on Gods and Goddesses and aspects of nature. In the present times, Aipan has developed and is being made into clothes, and utensils, considering the demand and interest, training in it is also being given in many institutes.
