Haldwani was known in ancient times as the marketplace of the hills where many 'Haldu' trees were found. Haldu means Kadam trees which are called Haldina Cordifolia in English. For this reason, the name of this area became famous as Haldwani.
In the 19th century, Haldwani was annexed by the British and made part of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. The British established a railway station in Haldwani, which led to the further development of the city as a major transport hub.
In December 1918, the second session of the Kumaon Council was held in this city. It was presided over by Rai Bahadur Tara Dutt Gairola.
